About

Houston Poetry Slam is the flagship program of Wrighter’s Ink, a Texas non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting the oral tradition of poetry. We organize performance poetry events that not only entertain but inform and educate the community.

We are the original Poetry Slam Incorporated certified poetry slam in Houston. Founded in 2002 by Doug Shields as Southmore House Slam, we changed our name to Houston Poetry Slam in 2005.

August – February is our regular season for poets to compete to be on the Houston Slam Team which represents Houston at the National Poetry Slam.

February through August is the spring through summer season for individual poets to qualify to represent Houston at the two national contests for individuals: the Individual World Poetry Slam every October or December depending on the schedule; and the Women of the World Slam every March.

We would appreciate the help of individuals and organizations with sponsorships. See you at a slam!
