Houston Poetry Slam is the original Poetry Slam Incorporated certified poetry slam in the city. We’ve maintained our certification continuously for over seven years. For each of those seven years we’ve sent a team to compete in one of our nations largest poetry festivals involving poets from all over the world: the National Poetry Slam. Twice in those seven years, our Houston team has made semi-finals. We provide various opportunities for any and all Houston poets to participate in our poetry slam, join our team, and perhaps help us get to a national championship.
You probably know poetry slam is competitive performance poetry, but we’re about more than competition. Poetry slam challenges new and veteran poets alike to hone their writing skills. If you think you could slam, but you’re not sure, we organize poetry slam workshops to show you how. And we don’t just encourage our participating poets to be hard core verbal competitors, either, since we’re also active in the community, holding classes and performing in local schools to exemplify to youth that it’s cool to be a writer, to be articulate, and to be a poet. That’s how much Houston Poetry Slam is committed to helping further the development and growth of our modern local poetry community
We also provide an incredibly unique form of entertainment for audiences wanting to enjoy something more than the usual “poetry reading”.
