Is there an age limit to join the team?

There is technically no age limit to try out for a team or to be a member of the team. As the Slammaster of Houston Poetry Slam, I prefer poets be at least 17 years old. But I’m willing to make allowances for any poet that demonstrates exceptional writing and performance ability. The real question is: if you’re an underage poet, will your parents allow you to compete locally or Nationally? Often slams occur in bars where alcohol is served. Will a parent object to their child being in such an environment? Poetry slams are uncensored. Would a parent object to their child expressing themselves poetically in an uncensored manner? Or would a parent object to their child hearing subject matter covered by adult poets? Generally speaking, if you’re going to have a problem with your parents letting you slam – you probably shouldn’t do it until you’re of legal age to make your own decisions.

    Hey Slammaster,

What does it really take to be a on the team? I love to write poetry and share it. I used to share it in the open mic nights in Charlotte, NC.

    What is slam poetry?

Like it says in this article: you have to show up to a scheduled slam and compete. If you qualify to be in the Final and you win a top four spot in the Final you’re on the team. This article will tell you what “slam” poetry is about basically http://houstonpoetryslam.org/7-poetry-slam-principles
