The art form of performance poetry, often referred to as Spoken Word, thrives among a vibrant community of dynamic poets right here in Houston, Texas. Since the year 2000, the competitive form of Spoken Word, called poetry slam, has struggled to gain notoriety in Houston's teeming arts scene.

For each of those seven years Houston Poetry Slam has barely beaten the financial and organizational odds to send the Houston Slam Team to the annual National Poetry Slam to compete against over seventy other teams from around the nation. These dedicated word smiths did more than take an expensive field trip for poets. They proved to the nation that Houston, like any other world class city, is home to some of the most literate, thought provoking, and expressive Spoken Word artists in the world. Yet since our beginning, the dream of growing Houston Poetry Slam and the Houston Slam Team as a local institution is under threat of fading into oblivion by neglect. You can be a part of keeping the dream alive.

On January 26, 2008 the Houston Grand Slam was the culmination of Super Slam Week and four poets became the 2008 Houston Slam Team which will represent our city at the 2008 National Poetry Slam in Madison, Wisconsin. But the Houston Slam Team could be so much more to our local community. Our Board of Directors believes that through the presentation of performance poetry to the general public and to school age youth, Houston Poetry Slam Teams can become a vehicle for education, creating awareness and appreciation for the power and excellence of expression inherent in the thought provoking content of quality spoken word poetry. One of our goals is to develop a Houston Teen Slam as an ideal tool to aid in the development of literacy among our local youth, by encouraging youth to write and perform their own poetry. Doesn't that sound like a literacy program worth your support?

We seek sponsors and/or donors with a strong community presence to help support the presentation of poetry slams in our city as well as the special season ending events like Super Slam Week and the Houston Grand Slam. Poetry Slam Incorporated is a 501c3 organization and serves as our umbrella. Through their Grant Back Program you can be assured that your gift is not only tax deductible but 90% of your gift will be granted back to support our local Houston Poetry Slam. Your generous donation can help develop a staging ground in which the art form of performance poetry can be embraced and thrive in the educational, theatrical, artistic, and cultural setting of Houston, Texas. Please, help by giving a tax deductible donation for this unique literary arts and youth literacy program today. Or volunteer to help organize our events. Whether you choose to give of your money or your time, both are invaluable and greatly appreciated. Our Sponsorship Package and Wish List offer suggestions to help you chose how you wish to help.
