I and my lovely partner in rhyme Trinity volunteered for an organization called Citizen Schools to teach a poetry slam apprenticeship at two different HISD campuses. Citizen Schools runs many apprenticeships for students in public schools across the nation, and Trinity and I just concluded our apprenticeships this week. Each apprenticeship culminates in a season ending event called a WOW, and our poetry slam WOW will be at Grady Middle School this Friday afternoon. I’m attending IWPS in Charlotte, and I’m real sorry I’m going to miss my kids.
We believe that poetry slam is a great way to teach communication skills, improve writing ability, and encourage literacy. We believe in this art form enough to share it with others, especially the youth, the ones that will keep performance poetry alive and well for the 21st century.
So go by Grady Middle School and cheer the kids on for me as they slam the poetry they labored over for the past few months.
